Prey Predator

Until date, none of the Predator sequels have been able to live up to the original. All the charm and success of the original is back in Prey (2022), but this time it's been pared down to its bare essentials to create a more primal and horrifying experience. At times, it evokes the tone of Revenant, and the audience is never sure whether or not the protagonists will survive. Although the backdrop is fantastic, I was concerned that the movie would attempt to complicate the story too much. Whereas The Predator tries to accomplish too much, Prey succeeds where its predecessor fails. It does well in serene, peaceful environments (just before each attack). Trachtenberg has now participated in two franchises, with the finest sequels in both. Though he obviously knows how to make the most of the setting and deliver the goods, the film's finest quality is its mood. The setting becomes more and more foreboding as time passes. This emotion is the source of the film's tense atmosphere, which builds steadily throughout (page) the movie's climactic third act. Developing its characters takes time, thus the sluggish beginning is to be expected.
